The confederates had won a series of battles and were fighting in Pennsylvania, northern territory, for the only time in the war. Atlanta Campaign: General Sherman led a military campaign down to "the heart of the south." Sherman's goal was to destroy the Confederates and southerners morale and end the war.Sherman wanted to
take over the railway centers in Atlanta, GA because the rail center was a

· Sherman’s army burned buildings, destroyed rail lines, set fire to factories, and demolished bridges on the way to Savannah
· Burning things would stop the South from fighting
· Confederate troops surrendered to Sherman without a fight because they were so scared and did not want to get destroyed.
